This Heron is easily identified by its bright red eyes and the two long, white, nuchal plumes. It is a resident of wetlands in North and South America, Eurasia, Africa, and the East Indies. As its name implies, it prefers to feed at night. According to legend, the 10th-century Emperor, Daigo, of Japan was so pleased with the beauty of this heron that he appointed it with rank to his Royal Court.
